Screenings, concerts, performances, talks and installations will unfold throughout a year dedicated to the many facets of his practice.
Reflecting Palais de Tokyo’s commitment to building long-term relationships with performance artists, along with the principles of institutional permaculture that guide its wider project, Symbiosis invites a different artist each year to inhabit the building : allowing their practice to become embedded within—and to act upon—the building, its programme and its publics. These encounters with audiences take many forms, ranging from quiet, intimate interventions to gestures on a more spectacular scale.
Through recurring concerns such as the refusal of socially imposed identities, the emancipatory power of play and imagination, and the body as a site of memory, Baloji continues at Palais de Tokyo a body of research spanning music, cinema, photography, installation and performance. He approaches these media as interwoven elements within a formal, poetic and political vocabulary, in which images, objects, bodies, sounds and narratives respond to, transform and extend one another.
Over the course of the year, the programme will present a selection of his short films – visual and narrative laboratories in their own right – as well as his first feature film, Omen, shown at Cannes in 2023, whose narrative universe will be extended through a live concert. A major programme in June 2027 will mark the release of Baloji’s second feature film, currently in post-production, through performances, installations and a new augmented-reality film.
